A Maize Farming Story
Discover how SumaGrow transformed a maize farm in Kitale.
About Kitale
A region blessed with fertile soils and perfect climate for maize farming.
Kitale, located in Kenya's Rift Valley, boasts fertile loamy soils with high organic content. The region receives 1,200–1,500 mm of rainfall annually, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 26°C. These conditions make it a leading maize production hub.
The Farming Journey
From soil preparation to harvest, see how SumaGrow made the difference.
Step 1: Soil Preparation
Soil tests revealed declining organic matter and microbial activity. To revitalize the soil, SumaGrow was applied, improving fertility and ensuring a nutrient-rich foundation for planting.
Step 2: Seeding
Certified hybrid maize seeds (H614D) were sown in furrows treated with SumaGrow. This improved germination rates, enhanced root development, and gave the crop a strong start.
Step 3: Growth Phase
SumaGrow was applied every three weeks, enabling James to cut synthetic fertilizer use by 35%. The maize showed healthier growth, with sturdy stalks and resistance to pests like stem borers.
Step 4: Flowering and Grain Formation
SumaGrow improved soil nutrients during flowering, ensuring uniform tasseling, better pollination, and consistent grain filling. The crop stood tall and vibrant throughout.
Step 5: Harvest
James achieved a record yield with 28% more maize compared to previous seasons. The larger cobs and well-filled grains earned him premium prices, while reduced input costs increased his profitability.
